When developing body composition equations, TANITA discovered that elite athletes required a different equation to maintain accuracy. Their muscle structure and hydration levels differ due to high levels of exercise over long periods of time. TANITA therefore created a specific 'Athlete' mode for its monitors, calibrated against a representative sample of athletes. As a general guideline, Athlete mode is recommended for those who engage in more than 10 hours of intensive aerobic exercise a week, for at least six months, and have a resting heartbeat of under 60bpm. It can also be used for those with a history of fitness.

TANITA Body Composition Monitors use Bio-electrical Impedance-Analysis (BIA) to calculate body composition. Safe, low-level electrical signals are passed through the body via patented footpads on the monitor platform. These signals flow easily through muscle and other body tissues but encounter resistance as they pass through body fat, which contains less fluid. This resistance, known as impedance, is used in mathematically researched formulas to calculate body composition.
